Designing retrieval for small models
Small models become more useful when retrieval supplies the minimum evidence needed for the question in front of them.
A compact model performs best when context is selected with care. Sending an entire content system into every prompt creates noise, increases latency, and makes the answer harder to evaluate.
A retrieval layer should begin with the visitor’s intent, find the smallest set of directly relevant records, and preserve the source identifiers used for the answer. That gives the interface evidence it can display without exposing internal instructions.
The goal is not maximum context. It is sufficient, trustworthy context delivered at the moment the model needs it.
